Many people these days are looking for ways to make the classic 9 to 5 office job a bit more bearable. These jobs can quite easily become a little boring over time, but luckily there’s ways you can make your time in the office more manageable.

We’re going to share with you 7 things you can do each day to mix things up a bit, and make the day seem more fulfilling. From switching around the order in which you complete tasks to staying more active during the day, we hope you’re able to take some of our advice onboard.

Mix Up Your Tasks

Speaking of mixing things up, we mean it quite literally! There’s always going to be those tasks that not many people enjoy doing, but unfortunately they’re a part of the job. We recommend sandwiching these tasks in between two things you actually enjoy doing on your schedule. This will help give you a much-needed boost for you to work through the boring stuff, having something more fun to dive into afterwards.

If you’re more senior (and therefore have more responsibilities), you can build your day full of different tasks entirely, avoiding the repetitiveness that some other workers may experience. You can schedule team huddles or meetings for times of the day that you know you’re going to be flagging, for a healthy boost to team morale.

Filling out your diary with tasks that require you to be on top form, and sprinkling in some team-boosting touch bases, is a great way to keep your attention laser focused.

Make Your Work Matter

Taking pride in the work you do is very important in todays culture. Not only does it build a positive attitude to work in yourself, but your hard work also reflects great on the company you work for. If you are proud of the work you are producing, it can have a hugely positive impact on your overall job satisfaction, which can spur you on to seek bigger and more fulfilling roles later down the line.

Even if the company you work for doesn’t make its’ goals and aspirations clear to its employees, you can be safe in the knowledge that the work which you are doing is the best you can produce. Hard work rarely goes unnoticed, so if you make your work matter, you’ll be a shoo-in for a promotion (or at least a fantastic reference if you decide to leave).

Maintain a Healthy Relationship with Your Co-Workers

Seeing as you have no choice in who you end up working with, you may as well make some friends along the way.

Working with people is vital, of course, and those work relationships can help to form the base of what ends up being fantastic work through collaboration. This is why you should always aim to keep your relationships with your co-workers in a positive state. Trying to work with people you dislike will inevitably lead to worse outcomes for both you and the company. On the other hand, working with people you enjoy spending time around will no doubt lead to great ideas and innovation.

We recommend avoiding workplace gossip at all costs, no matter how juicy the info sounds. Rumours and hearsay never lead to anything positive in the office and can even sour relationships with co-workers you like.

Make Your Lunch Break Great

Your lunch break in an office 9 to 5 job is a sacred time. It marks the end of the first half of the day and sets you up for the next half. This is where having an unsatisfying lunchtime meal can simply ruin the rest of your day. Having something delicious, however, can give you the energy and drive you need to blast through the rest of your daily tasks.

Food isn’t the only thing you need to focus on during your lunch break though. Why not plan some activities to do as well? Move away from your desk, or the office in general. Go for a walk, try meditation, or pop down to the local coffee shop for a much-needed change of scenery. These small things will help centre you and keep your mind off work for a short, but precious, time.

Stay Active

This point ties into our previous one quite well, in which you should always try to stay active during the day. You may decide to go for a run on your lunch break, but if you’re sitting in a chair for the rest of the day, it can have an adverse effect.

Make sure to get up from your desk every hour and walk around to stretch those sleeping muscles. Pop outside for some fresh air once in a while. Even simply walking across the office to speak to a co-worker in person can be great for your wellbeing. Staying sitting down for too long is never good for you, and work is no exception. Stay active, stay healthy.

Personalise Your Workstation

Who said your desk space can’t be jazzed up a little?

If you’re going to be working 9 to 5 in the same spot every day, it’s only natural to want that space to be engaging and motivate you. Why not bring some pictures from home and have them on your desk, or inspirational quotes if you’re feeling like you need to hear them? Plants or flowers are great ways to spruce up your space too, bringing the outdoors inside, and refreshing the air a bit more too.

Whatever you decide to do with your space, make sure it’s quintessentially you. It may even spur your co-workers on to do the same, which could help to give the whole office a more vibrant and inspirational feel.

Dress for the Occasion

So, you’ve heard of the phrase ‘dress to impress’, right? Well, the way we’re meaning it here, is that if you dress each day like you’re ready to conquer the world, then you just might be able to.

Wear clothes that you feel both comfortable and powerful in, because if you look good, then you will undoubtedly feel good too. This leads to a better attitude towards your work and can help make your 9 to 5 a walk in the park.

If you feel good about yourself while at work, it can help bring the best out in you, giving you the confidence to voice your ideas more proudly and tackle the day like never before.
